Firth College, Sheffield, and Professor of mathematics and physics there in
1883. Guided its development into a University College, and, finally, to its
full status in 1905; first Vice-Chancellor of the University, 1905.
Contributed greatly to the knowledge of vortices, concerning which he
published many papers. Author of a text book on Elementary Dynamics. Turned
his attention later to spectroscopy, on which he became a great authority and
was at the time of his death engaged upon a new work, The Structure of
Spectral Series
. Died Aug. 17, 1934, at Crowhurst, Sussex. Buried there.
