F.R.S., 1895; Croonian Lecturer, 1916. President of Section D of the British Association, 1903. Returned to Cambridge in 1926, and lectured to advanced classes whilst carrying on research on unicellular animals. 'His chief interest lay in Malaya and his popularity in Holland provided a useful liaison between Dutch and English zoologists.'
