Haygarth, John.

1766. Hon. M.D., Harvard, 1794. Practised at Chester, 1767-98. Physician to
the Chester Infirmary. Best known for having been the first to advocate
separate fever wards; the plan was afterwards adopted in other hospitals and
became universal. Removed to Bath, 1798, where he continued to practise.
Energetic in pressing for an inquiry into the state of the endowed Grammar
schools. A strong advocate of selfsupporting savings banks; his plan adopted
in Bath in 1813. F.R.S. and F.R.S. (Edin.) 1781. Cultivated an extensive
acquaintance with those who contributed to the promotion of benevolent or
scientific objects. A great planter of trees in his native dale. Author,
Plan to exterminate Small-Pox etc. Died June 10, 1827. Father of John
