Provost of Eton, 1840-52, during which time he was instrumental in the abolition of Montem. R. of Cottisford, Oxon., 1842-52. A friend of Byron, who on one occasion gave him £1000 to enable him to pay his father's debts; he visited Newstead in 1808, and held a long correspondence with Byron on religious and other topics whilst Byron was abroad. He also had some correspondence with Mrs Leigh regarding Lord and Lady Byron's separation, and made an appeal to the latter to explain the cause of their quarrel, but was unsuccessful. Table Talk (B. R. Haydon), II. 367, gives, on the authority of John Cam Hobhouse (1805), an apparently spiteful account of Hodgson's relations with Byron. See also Moore, Life of Byron.
