Accepted the Chiltern Hundreds in order to stand for the University when a vacancy occurred in 1779, but although apparently supported by the Ministry was at the bottom of the poll. Returned again for Christchurch, June 15, 1779-80. M.P. for Helston, 1781-6. Succeeded as 2nd Earl of Clarendon, Dec. 11, 1786. Captain in command of the Western Troop of Herts.
