An eminent figure in the world of letters, best known for his autobiographical novel, Father and Son, first published in 1907, and crowned by the French Academy in 1913. His more formal Life of P. H. Gosse appeared in 1890. Wrote biographies of Gray, Congreve, Donne, Jeremy Taylor, Patmore, Sir Thomas Browne, Ibsen and Swinburne. His poems were collected in 1911, and his essays in 1913. Other works include Northern Studies; Seventeenth Century Studies; History of Eighteenth Century Literature; The Jacobean Poets; Illustrated Record of English Literature (vols. III. and IV.); French Profiles; Books on the Table. The title Inter Arma sufficiently indicates that for him, even in 1916, the muses were not silent. Lived latterly at 17, Hanover Terrace, London.
