| Granby, Charles (Manners), Marquess of. Adm. nobleman (age 17) at TRINITY, Nov. 11, 1771. [2nd but 1st surviving] s. of John Manners (1738), Marquess of Granby. [B. Feb. 21, 1754.] School, Eton. Matric. Easter, 1772; M.A. 1774. Usually, though improperly, known (after his brother's death) as Lord Roos, 1760-70. Styled Marquess of Granby, 1770-9. M.P. for the University, 1774-9, when he vehemently opposed the taxation of America. Succeeded as 4th Duke of Rutland on the death of his grandfather, May 29, 1779. Lord-Lieut. of Leics., 1779-87. Elected K.G., Oct. 3, 1783, but never installed. P.C., 1783. Lord Steward of the Household, Feb.-Dec. 1783, having for two months a seat in the Cabinet. Privy Seal, Dec. 1783-Feb. 1784. Viceroy of Ireland, 1784-7, being noted for the magnificence of his entertainments. Married, Dec. 26, 1776, Mary Isabella, dau. of Charles Noel (Somerset), 4th Duke of Beaufort, and had issue. Died Nov. 25, 1787, at the Vice Regal Lodge, Dublin. Barrington, Hist. Memoirs, II. 225, says that he and his wife 'were reckoned the handsomest couple in Ireland.' His portrait 'after Sir John Reynolds' is engraved in Doyle's Official Baronage. His wife was painted four times by Reynolds. Father of John H., 5th Duke of Rutland (1794). (Eton Coll. Reg.
