M.P. for Saffron Walden div. of Essex, 1885-95. President of the Board of Agriculture, 1892-5. P.C. Created Baron Burghclere of Walden, Aug. 3, 1895. A Director of the P. and O. Steamship Company. An Ecclesiastical Commissioner, 1903-21. Chairman of Royal Commission on Historical Monuments. Author of a translation of Virgil's Georgics, 1904; of several novels, and of the comedies Time will tell; Our Bitterest Foe; After Dinner; Cousin Zacchary, etc. Resided at 48, Charles Street, London, where he died s.p.m. May 6, 1921.
