Gordon, George Hamilton (Lord Haddo). Adm. nobleman at ST JOHN'S, June 30, 1800. S. and h. of George Gordon (Viscount Haddo). [B. Jan. 28, 1784, in Edinburgh.] School, Harrow. Styled Lord Haddo from his father's death in 1791 and succeeded his grandfather as 4th Earl of Aberdeen, Aug. 1801. Matric. Fell.-Com. Easter, 1804; M.A. 1804. Travelled in Greece and founded the Athenian Society, 1803, and was the 'travelled thane' of Byron's English Bards and Scotch Reviewers. Scottish representative peer, 1806-14. Order of the Thistle, 1808. F.S.A., 1808; President, 1812-16. Ambassador-Extraordinary at Vienna, 1813, and representative at the Congress of Châtillon, 1814. P.C. Created Viscount Gordon, 1814. Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. Foreign Secretary, 1828-30 and 1841-6. Secretary for War and the Colonies, 1834-5. Brought in the Non- Intrusion Bill, an attempt to avert the impending schism in the Scotch Church, but had to withdraw it owing to much opposition. Improved relations with America by the Oregon treaty, 1846. The recognized leader of the Peel party after the death of Sir Robert Peel, 1850. Joined the Whigs on the house-tax resolution, 1852, and brought about the defeat of Lord Derby's ministry. Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, 1852; resigned after vote of censure on the conduct of the war, 1855. Order of the Garter, 1855. Spoke for the last time in the House of Lords during the debate on the Scotch Universities Bill, 1858. Married (1) July 28, 1805, Lady Catherine Elizabeth Hamilton, dau. of John, 1st Marquis of Abercorn, and had issue; (2) July 8, 1815, Harriet, dau. of the Hon. John Douglas and widow of James, Viscount Hamilton, and had further issue. In Nov. 1818, obtained a Royal licence to assume the surname of Hamilton immediately before Gordon 'as a last memorial of his respect for the memory of his late father-in-law, John James, Marquis of Abercorn, K.C., deceased.' Author of a Preface and Notes on Whittington's Ecclesiastical Antiquities of France and an Introduction to a translation by William Wilkins of The Civil Architecture of Vitruvius which was afterwards published separately under the title of An Enquiry into the Principles of Beauty in Grecian Architecture. His correspondence was privately printed by his son, Sir A. H. Gordon, afterwards Lord Stanmore. Died Dec. 14, 1860, at Argyll House, Regent Street, London. 'A man of encyclopaedic knowledge. Colleagues and friends, whenever at a loss, came to him for information on the most varied topics and rarely in vain.' Brother of Robert (1809); father of George J. J. (1834), Arthur C. H. (1846) and Douglas H. (1842). Harrow Sch. Reg. states that his second son (b. 1817), the Hon. Alexander Hamilton, was also at Trinity, but for this there is no College or University evidence.
