Gomm, Sir William Maynard. Hon. LL.D. 1842, incorp. from Oxford. S. and h. of Lieut.-Col. William (1771), of the 55th Regt. B. in Barbados, 1784. Educated privately. Entered the Army as an Ensign; served with the 9th Foot in Holland, 1799; at Ferrol, 1800, and Hanover, 1805; Capt., 1803; Assistant Quartermaster-Gen. in Copenhagen Expedition, 1807; in Portugal, 1808; at Corunna, with Moore; on Staff of Walcheren Expedition, 1809; in the Peninsula, 1810-14; Lieut.-Col., 1812. Greatly distinguishing himself at Salamanca, 1812, led his Division in subsequent retreat on Portugal and advance to the Ebro. Created K.C.B., 1815, and transferred to Coldstream Guards. On Staff at Quatre Bras and Waterloo, 1815. Major-Gen., 1837. Succeeded to his aunt's (Miss Jane Gomm) property, 1822, and became Lord of the manor of Rotherhithe. Commander in Jamaica, 1839-42; founded a sanatorium for the white troops there. Governor of Mauritius, 1842-9. Commander-in-Chief in India, 1850-5; General, 1854; Field Marshal, 1868. Constable of the Tower, 1872-5. G.C.B., 1859. D.C.L. Oxford, 1834. Knight of 2nd class of St Anne of Russia, and Order of St Vladimir, 1874.
