Dec. 8, 1845, at Oxford. School, Charterhouse. A great Chinese scholar with a worldwide reputation. Joined the Chinese Consular Service, 1867. Vice-Consul, Pagoda Island, 1880; Shanghai, 1883. Consul at Tamsui, 1885; at Ningpo, 1891; resigned, 1893. Hon. LL.D., Aberdeen, 1897. Order of Chia Ho from the Chinese Government, 1923. Hon.D.Litt., Oxford, 1924. Gold Medal of the Royal Asiatic Society, 1922. His outstanding achievement was the Chinese English Dictionarybegun in 1874 and completed 1892; revised, enlarged and published 1912; for this work he was awarded the Prix St Julien by the French Government, in 1911. A Chinese Biographical Dictionary (for which he also received the Prix St Julien) appeared in 1897. As Professor of Chinese, he did much to foster study of the language in the University; as the result of his influence, Chinese was made a subject for the Previous Examination, in place of Latin or Greek, for natives of Asia. Compiled a Catalogue of the Chinese and Manchu books in the Wade Library at Cambridge, 1898, and added a supplementary Catalogue in 1915. First Lecturer on the Dean Lung Foundation of Columbia University, N.Y. His best-known works include: Chinese without a Teacher; A Record of Buddhistic Kingdoms; A History of Chinese Literature; Religions of Ancient China; Introduction to the History of Chinese Pictorial Art; Chuang Tzŭ: Mystic, Moralist and Social Reformer; Chinese Instructions to Coroners; Quips from a Chinese Jest Book; Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio; The Civilization of China (The Home University Library).
