High Sheriff of Cornwall, 1792-3. Encouraged the early talents of Sir Humphry Davy. A college friend of Thomas Beddoes, who dedicated a work to him. Selected Brunel's design for the Clifton suspension bridge, 1830, and calculated for Telford the length of the chains required for the Menai bridge. Suggested the establishment of the observatory at the Cape of Good Hope, 1819. [p.44] During the Corn Bill riots, Mar. 1815, his residence, 6, Holles Street, London, was attacked by the mob.
