Fiott (post Lee), John. Adm. pens. at ST JOHN'S, Nov. 21, 1801. [S. and h. of John, merchant, of London, who was descended from an old Burgundian family of Dijon, and Harriet, dau. of William Lee, of Totteridge.] B. Apr. 28, 1783. School, Mackworth, Derbs. Visited various European countries, Egypt, and the Holy Land and amassed a valuable collection of antiquities. Three of his letters to the Vice-Chancellor have been preserved. Took the name of Lee by Royal Mandate, Oct. 4, 1816, at the request of his uncle, William Lee. Adm. an Advocate in Doctors' Commons, Nov. 3, 1816; Steward, Librarian, and Treasurer. Practised occasionally in Ecclesiastical Courts until their suppression in 1858. Adm. at Gray's Inn, July 13, 1863. Q.C., 1864; Bencher, 1864. Succeeded to all the estates of the Lee family on the death of the Rev. Sir George Lee, 6th and last Bart., of Hartwell, becoming Lord of the Manors of Hartwell, Stone and Bishopstone. J.P. for Bucks. An original member of the Royal Astronomical Society; Treasurer, 1831-40; President, 1861-2; founded the Lee Fund for the widows and children of deceased Fellows. Built an Observatory in the grounds at Hartwell, where, amongst other workers, Admiral William Henry Smyth continued his Cycle of Celestial Objects. F.R.S., 1831. First President of the Numismatic Society, 1837; a medal by Stothard being struck in his honour. A rigid teetotaller and a determined enemy to the use of tobacco in any form.
