After being at Winchester College for six years, had four years' study at Aix-la-Chapelle; became a medical student at Edinburgh University, 1873-5, and completed his medical course in London.
Through the influence of Prof.
A. H. Garrod, formerly Fellow of St John's, entered that college and devoted himself to zoological pursuits.
Wrote on the muscular structure and voice organs of birds.
Followed Garrod as Prosector to the Zoological Society, 1879-83.
Travelled in Brazil, U.S.A. and N. Africa to investigate fauna.
Author, Collected Papers of A. H. Garrod. Died of dysentry, Jan. 14, 1883, at Shonga, 400 miles up the Niger.
Buried Apr. 1, 1884, at Wickham, Kent.
