Served in Cadiz and Gibraltar, and appointed Deputy Judge-Advocate-General in Italy by Lord William Bentinck.
Took an active part in the war between Great Britain and the U.S.A., being present at the taking of Washington, the Battle of Baltimore, and the attempt on New Orleans, where he was captured by the enemy.
Served in France with the Army of Occupation, 1815.
Returned to England, 1816, and was called to the Bar, Lincoln's Inn, 1816.
Appointed Commissioner of Bankruptcy, 1817.
On the institution of the Bankruptcy Court, appointed one of the original Commissioners, 1830-65.
Author (jointly with Dr J. A. Paris), Medical Jurisprudence (awarded the Swiney Prize); Observations on the Bill for Consolidation and Amendment of the Laws relating to Bankrupts. One of the founders of the Jurist, 1827.
