Desiderius ERASMUS

Educated at the school of Deventer [ Holland ???], where he learned Greek.
Ord. priest, 1492 .
Private secretary to the Bishop of Cambrai who gave him the means to go to Paris [ France ]. Studied there, 1496-7 .
Came to England ; studied at St Mary Hall, Oxford, and visited Cambridge, where he was made D.D. 1506 .
Went to Rome [ Italy ] in 1506, and was dispensed from his monastic vows; also visited Venice [ Italy ] and Bologna [ Italy ].
Returned to England in 1510, and resided in Queens' College, 1510-5 .
For a time Public Orator.
Lady Margaret Professor of Theology, 1511-5 .
Visited Flanders in 1514, and became a Councillor of Charles V.
Latterly resided at Basel [ Switzerland ], where his great work, the first edition of the New Testament in Greek, was published, in 1516 .
Offered a Cardinalate by Paul III, in 1535 .
Died 11 Jul., 1536, at Basel [ Switzerland ].
