There is an account of two of these (on Goethe's Faust and Correspondence with Schiller) in Carlyle's Correspondence with Goethe, 1887, 255 and 282.
His article on Bentham (1843) was answered by John Stuart Mill.
Another contribution was on Dr Thomas Arnold, with whom he was at school at Winchester, and with whose opinions upon educational and ecclesiastical questions he sympathised.
Succeeded to the editorship of The Edinburgh Review in 1847.
Died Dec. 10, 1852, at Haileybury.
