Ellice, Edward. Adm. pens. (age 18) at TRINITY, June 6, 1828. [Only] s. of [The Rt. Hon.] Edward [M.P., by his first wife, Lady Hannah Althea Bettesworth]. B. [Aug. 19, 1810], in London. School, Eton. Matric. Michs. 1828; M.A. 1831. In the Diplomatic Service; went to Russia, 1832, as Private Secretary to Lord Durham, and in the same capacity to Canada, 1838. M.P. for Huddersfield, 1836-7; for St Andrew's District, 1837-79. Supported the abolition of the Corn Laws and of the Navigation laws, and strongly maintained the principles of Free Trade. Gave important aid in the reform of Scotch Poor Law and Lunacy Law, opposed the Maynooth Fraud, and advocated the disestablishment of the Irish Church. Offered a peerage by Gladstone, in 1869, but declined it. Gave valuable evidence before the Royal Commission on the state of the Highlands, 1873. Retired from Parliament, Nov. 4, 1879. J.P. and D.L.
