Founder and Treas. of Northumberland and Durham Branch of Soc. for Promoting the Employment of Women 1860; Sec. of a cttee. for obtaining the admission of women to univ. exams. 1862-69, which in 1865 secured the admission of girls to the Camb. Jun. and Sen. Local Exams.; promoted a memorial 1864, which in 1869 caused girls' sch. to be included in the scope of the Schools Inquiry Comm. (1864-68): its findings and the opening of the local exams. to girls led to the modernisation of girls' educ.; founded the London Schoolmistresses' Assoc. 1866 and was its Treas. until its dissolution in 1888; with Mme Bodichon and Bessie Rayner Parkes (afterwards Mme Louis Belloc) organised the first petition for women's suffrage 1866, presented to Parliament by John Stuart Mill; Sec. of the first Women's Suffrage Cttee. 1866-67; began to take steps for the foundation of a college for women 1867; opened 'The College for Women' at Benslow House, Hitchin, 1869, transferred to Camb. as Girton Coll. in 1873; from its beginnings to 1904 directed the financial and general policy of the College, as Sec. 1867-75, Treas. 1875-82, Hon. Sec. 1882-1904; one of the first women mem bers of the London Sch. Bd. 1870-73; Mistress of Girton 1872-75. Chairman of the London Soc. for Women's Suffrage 1904. Hon. LL.D. (Glas.) 1901, the first year in which the Univ. of Glasgow conferred hon. degrees on women, on the occasion of its 9th jubilee. Member of College 1872-1921; Member of Exec. Cttee. 1875-1904.
