Daintree, Richard. Adm. pens. at CHRIST'S, June 30, 1851. S. of Richard, farmer. B. Dec. 13, 1832, at Hemingford Abbots, Hunts. School, Bedford. Matric. Michs., 1851. Kept three terms. Left England through ill-health in 1852 and went to Melbourne, Australia. Having a taste for scientific pursuits he became acquainted with A. R. C. Selwyn, the government geologist of Victoria, who chose him as his assistant in 1854. Returned to England, and became a student in the Royal School of Mines, 1856-7. Returned to Melbourne, and was appointed Field Geologist on the geological survey of Victoria, 1858-64, during which time he underwent severe privation in penetrating the dense scrubs of the Bass river district. Government Geologist for North Queensland, 1869-72, where he examined the auriferous strata. Entrusted with a collection sent to the Exhibition at South Kensington in 1871, but the steamer, Queen of the Thames, containing the collection was wrecked near Cape Agulhas, about 200 miles from Cape Town, Mar. 18, 1871. Agent-General in London for Queensland, 1872-8, when his health failed. C.M.G., 1878. His work on the geology of Queensland was so complete, and was regarded by the government as so useful, that they contributed largely to the cost of its production and publication.
