Donaldson, John William. Adm. pens. (age 18) at TRINITY, Jan. 30, 1830. [2nd] s. of Stuart, merchant. B. June 7, 1811, in London. Private tuition. Matric. Michs. 1830; Scholar, 1833; B.A. (2nd Classic) 1834; M.A. 1837; B.D. 1844; D.D. 1849; ad eundem Oxford, June 10, 1858. Fellow, 1835; Tutor. President of the Union, 1839. Ord. deacon (Gloucester) Dec. 22, 1839; priest, June 14, 1840. Head Master, King Edward's School, Bury St Edmunds, 1841-55. A brilliant and original scholar; one of the pioneers in applying comparative methods to Greek and Latin Philology. His abilities being not those of an administrator, his work at Bury St Edmunds was chiefly valuable for the intellectual influence he exerted on the town. In Jashar (published 1854) he advanced the bold critical theory that fragments of a book of Jashar are to be detected throughout the Old Testament up to and including the reign of Solomon, and that they are 'the religious marrow of the scriptures.' The outcry which this provoked very possibly precipitated his resignation as Head Master. Returned to Cambridge, 1855, where he obtained a great reputation as a private tutor. Edited Buckham's The Theatre of the Greeks, originally published in 1827; The New Cratylus, 1839; Varronianus, 1844; Jashar; Fragmenta archetypa carminum Hebraicorum, 1854, etc. Married, 1840, Laetitia, dau. of Sir John Mortlock, banker, of Cambridge. Died Feb. 10, 1861, at his mother's house, Hyde Park, London. (D.N.B.; Boase, I. 893; Memorials of H. A. Morgan, 205; Al.
