Dixon, Henry Hall. Adm. pens. at TRINITY, Mar. 3, 1841. [2nd s. of Peter, cotton manufacturer], of Warwick Bridge, Carlisle. [B. there May 16, 1822.] School, Rugby. Matric. Michs. 1842; B.A. 1846. Adm. at the Middle Temple, Jan. 27, 1848. Articled to a Solicitor at Doncaster. Called to the Bar, Middle Temple, 1853. On the Midland Circuit. Sporting writer known as 'The Druid.' Author of Post and Paddock, 1856; Silk and Scarlet, 1859; Scott and Sebright, 1862 (all of which appeared in the Sporting Magazine); The Law of the Farm, a useful compendium, 1858. Afterwards wrote a column entitled 'The Farm' in the Illustrated London News. In 1859 began a series of papers on 'The Flocks and Herds of Great Britain' in the Mark Lane Express. Author, Field and Fern, 1865, the result of a tour of inspection of cattle in Scotland, on the conclusion of which he rode from the Orkneys to his house at Kensington on the back of a small pony, without stopping at an hotel, thus winning a bet of a sovereign from the editor of The Field. Wrote Saddle and Sirloin, 1870. Appointed to staff of the Daily News. Married, May, 1847, Caroline, dau. of Thomas Lynes, and had issue. Noted for his solitary and eccentric habits, and indifference to money and regular meals. His health gave way from constant exposure during his travels, and he died Mar. 16, 1870, at Warwick Gardens, Kensington.
