A founder of the C.U.M.S., at whose early concerts his performances of comic songs were a great feature. A high churchman, his pronounced views were not acceptable to the Bishop, who refused to licence his curates. Author, Sermons; Introduction on the Manner of Performing Divine Service; Eucharistic Truth and Ritual, a Letter to the Bishop of Durham. Best known by his hymn-tunes, most of which first appeared in Hymns Ancient and Modern (1862), notably his tune to Lead Kindly Light. Married, 1850, Susan, dau. of G. Kingston, Esq.
