School, Charterhouse (exhibitioner). Matric. Michs. 1881; Scholar; Chancellor's English Medallist, 1884; B.A. (Class. Trip., Pt I, 1st Class) 1884; M.A. 1888. Fellow, 1887-1932. University Extension Lecturer, 1885-6. College Lecturer in Political Science, 1896-1920. Studied medicine, 1886-8; passed two M.B. examinations, but finally relinquished intention of becoming a doctor. Joined the Society for Psychical Research, 1890; a member of its Council, 1904-20. Concerned in founding the Independent Review, 1903; a member of the Editorial Council. At the invitation of Professor Marshall, in 1903, helped to establish the Economics Tripos. First Secretary of the Economics Board. Lecturer at the London School of Economics, 1911-20. Kahn Travelling Scholarship, 1912. Visited America, India and China; attracted by Chinese civilisation, feeling for it a natural sympathy and intellectual affinity. A convinced pacifist, who worked assiduously in the cause of international good government. One of the first persons in England to formulate the idea of a 'League of Nations'; formed a group, subsequently known as the Bryce Group, in 1914. Attended a small international meeting of pacifists at the Hague, 1915, and subsequently visited America on a lecturing tour on behalf of the League 'idea.' For a short time a member of the Executive Council of the League of Nations Union. A man of wide sympathies with a special capacity for friendship; possessed considerable poetic and musical skill.
