Lawn tennis 'blue,' 1896, 1897 and 1898. Won the All England Singles Championship, 1902-6 (when he resigned the title) and the All England Doubles with his brother R. F. (next), 1897-1900 and 1903-5. In the Davis International Cup contests, although once on the losing side, he never himself lost a match. The only Englishman to win the American National Championship, 1903. After 1906 retired from competition lawn tennis and became very efficient at golf. Served in the Great War, 1914-18 (2nd Lieut. (T.) in anti-aircraft branch of the R.N.R.). This strenuous work probably led to the breakdown of a never robust man, and he died Aug. 21, 1919, after a long illness.
