As a classical scholar he has been compared with Porson, but his health gave way soon after his election to the Greek Chair, and he only held it for two years.
Author of reviews of Greek works in the Monthly Review, 1807 and 1808.
In 1820 produced Porson's Aristophanica, with the Plutus prefixed, chiefly from Porson's autograph, and in 1822 edited the lexicon of the patriarch Photius from Porson's transcript of the Gale MSS. in Trinity College Library, adding an edition of a rhetoric lexicon.
Had a share in founding Valpy's Classical Journal, 1810, writing papers and reviews in it. Bequeathed 1000 volumes to Trinity Library, and to the University, his books with MSS. notes, from which his successor, Professor Scholefield, published two volumes of Adversaria. Died Sept. 24, 1825, at his rooms in Trinity.
Buried close to Porson in the college chapel.
