A.D.C. to Rajah Brooke, of Sarawak, his brother-in-law, 1876-8. From 1887 to 1913 did much adventurous travelling, chiefly as a newspaper correspondent, and investigated social conditions in many countries, especially Russia. His knowledge of prison conditions in Siberia qualified him to attend (as a British delegate) the Penal Congress held in Paris, 1895. Travelled in 1901-2 from Paris to New York by land. During the War was engaged in recruiting and then, 1917-18, as Commandant of a camp for prisoners of war. Author of travel memoirs, etc. Married three times. Died Nov. 30, 1933, at Bournemouth.
