Knighted, Dec. 7, 1882, on the occasion of the opening of the new Law Courts. For many years, having almost no practice at the Bar, he devoted himself to reporting and published many volumes of reports on cases in bankruptcy and in chancery. In most of these publications he had collaborators, including Basil Montague and Mr (subsequently Lord) Macnaghten. His practice in bankruptcy grew to be extensive and his successful appeal case against the Duke of Newcastle was famous and important. In 1867 he became auditor of the Legal and General Insurance Office, and in 1871 a Director. Treasurer of Lincoln's Inn, 1882. Died May 14, 1887, aged 78, at 20, Hyde Park Square, London. Buried at Kensal Green.
