Cavendish, of Grimstone Hall, Suffolk. Bapt. at Trimley
St Martin, Sept. 19, 1560. Perhaps adm. at Gray's Inn,
1577. M.P. for Shaftesbury, 1584-6; and for Wilton, 1588.
Famous as a navigator. His first voyage was to Virginia,
in 1585. On the second, 1586-8, he passed the Straits of
Magellan and circumnavigated the globe, gaining rich prizes
from the Spaniards. His third was disastrous; and he died
at sea, near St Helena, June, 1592, on his return. Brother
