In 1880 visited the chief libraries in Europe to study early printing and engraving. A collector of pictures, particularly Lombard Masters; his 'finds' included 'Christ' by Foppa and the so-called 'Danaë' of Lotto. Knighted, 1895. An enthusiastic mountaineer; joined the Alpine Club; President, 1902-4. Received the gold medal for mountain survey at the Paris Exhibition, 1900. Explored the Himalayas and the interior of Spitzbergen; surveyed the Bolivian Andes and the mountains of Tierra del Fuego; traversed the whole range of Alps. F.S.A., F.R.G.S.; awarded the Founder's medal of the Royal Georgraphical Society, 1905. Director-General of the Imperial War Museum, 1917. A trustee of the National Portrait Gallery and the Wallace Collection. M.P. for English Universities, 1918-31. Hon. Litt.D. (Durham and Manchester) 1919.
