Went to Australia in 1839; in charge of King's School, Parramatta, also undertaking clerical duty in that district. Minister of Campbelltown, 1844-7; of St Thomas's, Willoughby, 1846-70. Made geological researches in New South Wales, discovering gold there in 1841, tin in 1849 and diamonds in 1859. Worked for the development of the valuable coalfields in the State. F.G.S., 1826. Murchison Medal, 1877. F.R.S., 1876. A trustee of the Australian Museum and a Fellow of St Paul's College, Sydney, 1853. Died July 17, 1878, at Sydney.
