Prominent member of the Metaphysical Society, 1874-9. A follower of the English school of philosophy, venerating Berkeley and Hume and radically opposed to the teachings of Hegelians. As a mathematician, helped to revolutionise the teaching of elementary mathematics; introduced into England the graphical and geometrical methods of Mobius, Culmann and other Germans.
