Artillery Company (and served in the South African War). Engaged in literary work. Became a convert to Home Rule, joining a committee in London to discuss the problem, in 1911. Served in the Great War (Lieut.-Commander, R.N.V.R.; Major; Staff Officer; D.S.C.; mentioned in despatches). On demobilization determined to devote himself to securing independence for Ireland. Joined the Irish Republican Movement, 1919. Elected in the 'Dail Eireann' for Co. Wicklow, 1921. Minister of propaganda. Secretary to the Irish delegation which negotiated the Treaty with the British Government, 1921. Finally felt unable to accept any treaty which failed to recognise an Irish Republic.
