Cheke, John.

Fellow, 1529. S. of Peter (1509), University Bedell. B. in
Cambridge, June 16, 1514. An early reformer. Greek
lecturer in the University, and the first Regius Professor,
1540. Public orator, 1544. Incorp. at Oxford, 1542; and
canon of King's College (Christ Church), Oxford. Tutor to
Prince Edward, 1544. M.P. for Bletchingley, 1547, 1553.
Provost of King's, 1548-53. Knighted, 1551. Chamberlain
of the Exchequer, clerk of the Council, and secretary of State,
1552. Under Queen Mary he retired abroad, and for a time
lectured in Greek at Strasburg. He was seized in Flanders,
brought to England, and committed to the Tower. Under
threats he abjured Protestantism and was received into the
Romish Church, Oct. 4, 1556. Died in London, Sept. 13,
1557. Buried at St Alban's, Wood St. M.I. there. Known
as one of the principal restorers of Greek learning in England.
