Claimed his father's peerage but his claim disallowed, the suit ending in favour of his uncle, Thomas (1792). One of the oldest members of the Jockey Club; 'the luckiest man on the turf' and one of the best judges of yearlings.
Erected at Barnard Castle the 'Josephine and John Bowes Museum' and park, at a cost of £80,000, in memory of his first wife, and gave art treasures to the museum.
Died Oct. 9, 1885, at Streatlam Castle.
