Took the name of Boyd on succeeding, under the will of his grandfather, to an estate in Co. Antrim, in 1768.

Called to the Bar, 1776.
A constant contributor to the newspaper press – especially to the Public Advertiser (the authorship of the Letter of Junius was claimed for him by his friends). Went to India as Secretary to Lord Macartney, Governor of Madras, 1781.
Sent on a special mission to the King of Candy, with an expedition under Admiral Sir Edward Hughes, against the Dutch in Ceylon; landed at Trincomalee and set out for Candy to negotiate a treaty of alliance with the King to aid the British against the Dutch.
Failed in this and set out for Madras, but was made prisoner on board the French frigate, La Fine. Sent to Mauritius and thence to the Isle of Bourbon; eventually released on parole and returned to Madras.
Conducted a paper, The Madras Courier, 1792, and subsequently the Indian Observer. Died Oct. 19, 1794, at Madras.
