While still an undergraduate represented to the Government the advisability of forming rifle clubs for defence against invasion, and created a model rifle club at Cambridge in 1837. Joined the Royal Victoria Rifle Club, 1858. Mastered the principles of naval construction and designed several yachts; advocated life-ship stations and fitted out a model life-ship at his own expense. A gastronome of repute; assisted in the establishment of the School of Cookery at South Kensington. Founded the New Quarterly Review, 1874. Author, The Navies of the World, their Present state and Future Capabilities (1859), etc. Died Mar. 11, 1882, at Ashley Place, Westminster. Father of Rachel Harriette Busk, the well-known writer on folk-lore.
