Berthon, Edward Lyon. Adm. Fell.-Com. at EMMANUEL, Nov. 12, 1834. [S. of Peter, army contractor, of Southampton, and a descendant of Paul Berthon, a Huguenot refugee. B. Feb. 20, 1813, in London.] Adm. Fell.-Com. at Magdalene, Oct. 14, 1841; matric. Michs. 1841; B.A. 1845; M.A. 1849. Previously studied surgery at Liverpool and Dublin. Married Margaret, dau. of William Preston, of Toxteth Park, Liverpool, June 4, 1834. Went abroad, 1834. Devoted himself to experiments in mechanical science. Invented a two-bladed screw-propeller for ships, which was rejected by the Admiralty and returned to him as a 'pretty toy,' 1835. Ord. deacon, 1845; priest (Winchester) 1846; C. of Lymington, Hants., 1845. Took up painting and became very proficient. V. of Fareham, Hants., 1847-57. Invented a nautical log known as 'Berthon's Log'; condemned by the Admiralty as 'too delicate an instrument to be serviceable.' His design for a collapsible boat was also rejected, but afterwards approved, and he eventually received upwards of £15,000 in orders from the Admiralty. V. of Romsey, 1860-91. Rural Dean. Surrogate, Winchester dio., 1860-99. Designed the Romsey Observatory and constructed astronomical telescopes. Restored the Abbey Church and used his mechanical skill to accomplish remarkable feats of construction. Given to sudden inspirations as when coming into the vestry after service full of the idea of a collapsible anchor 'a sea umbrella' he called it he began to describe it to his astonished choir, 'while chalking up rapid diagrams on the vestry door.'
