Chaplain and tutor in Bishop Stillingfleet's family, 1683-95. Boyle lecturer, 1692. Preb. of Worcester, 1692. Keeper of the royal libraries, and F.R.S., 1695. Chaplain to the King, 1695. Archdeacon of Ely, 1701. Master of Trinity College, Feb. 1, 1699-1700 till 1742. During nearly his whole tenure he was involved in incessant disputes with the fellows. Regius Professor of Divinity, 1717-42. In 1718 the University deprived him of his degrees: they were restored in 1724. He died July 14, 1742, and was buried in the College Chapel.
