Articled to Philip Charles Hardwick, architect, for three years. Opened an office in Adelphi Terrace, 1856. President of the Architectural Association, 1861. F.R.I.B.A., 1867; Vice-President, 1886. Associated with Arthur Edmund Street in superintending the erection of the Law Courts in London, 1881. Succeeded to his old master's post of Architect to the Bank of England, 1883. Most of his work was ecclesiastical and in the Gothic style; an outstanding achievement being the scheme for Church House, Dean's Yard, Westminster. Designed many churches in England and abroad. Made important restorations in the cathedrals of Canterbury, Salisbury, Lincoln and Chichester. A.R.A., 1888. F.S.A., 1881. Knighted, June 4, 1889. Architect of Selwyn College Chapel and responsible for additions to the Library and Master's Lodge at Trinity College. Died suddenly, Oct. 30, 1899. Buried at Broadway, Worcestershire.
