A Cornet, 7th Hussars, 1817. Took the additional surname of Hughes, by Royal Licence, Aug. 7, 1819, on succeeding to a fortune of £40,000 p.a., from his uncle, Admiral Sir Edward Hughes. A great gambler, known as 'Golden Ball', lost £45,000 in one night at Wattier's Club, Piccadilly. Lived latterly at St Germain. Married Mercandotti, the opera dancer and natural daughter of the 4th Earl Fife, Mar. 22, 1823. Died Mar. 13, 1863, at St Germain.
