Justice of the King's Bench Division of the High Court of Justice, 1910-35. Presided over many famous criminal trials. Knighted, 1910. P.C., 1932. A member of the Court of Criminal Appeal. Attained a high reputation as a criminal lawyer. A great public servant and a model judgeaptly described as 'embodying not only the majesty of the law but also the majesty of goodness.' A keen golfer, one of the founder members of the Woking Golf Club. A regular competitor in the Bar Golf Society's meetings. Winner of the Judges' Golf Tournament in 1911, and the Bar Tournament in 1929. Married and had issue. Died suddenly June 13, 1935, aged 83, at the Dormy House Club, Rye.
