Served in the Great War (R.A.M.C., 1915; 6th Royal Berks.
Regt.; Capt., 1916; M.C., 1916; V.C., 1917, 'for most conspicuous bravery'). Rendered valiant service during the fighting in Delville Wood, July, 1916; and later in the fighting around the Menin Road, near Ypres, July 31, 1917.
Of this latter occasion Capt.
Nichols wrote: 'In all that hellish turmoil, there had been one quiet figure most heroic, most wonderful of all: Dr Ackroyd, the 6th Berks. medical officer, a stooping, grey-haired, bespectacled man rose to the supremest heights; he seemed to be everywhere...no wounded man was treated hurriedly or unskilfully; he worked as stoically as if he were in the quiet of an operating Theatre.' Killed in action Aug. 11, 1917.
