Held several offices at the Papal Court. Cardinal-priest, 1842. Brought about the division of England into eight Catholic districts or vicariates apostolic, 1840. All affairs of consequence concerning England and its dependencies were referred by the Pope to him. Interpreter and only witness of Gregory XVI, in the important interview with the Emperor Nicholas I of Russia. Died June 23, 1847, at Naples, in the Jesuits' Convent. Brother of [Sir] Richard (1819).
