Professor of English History in the Presidency College of Calcutta, 1856-64, and Principal of Sanskrit College, Calcutta, 1858. Instituted the M.A. course at Calcutta University. Joint founder (with R. C. Jebb) and first President of the Cambridge Philological Society, 1868-75. Awarded the first gold medal of the Royal Asiatic Society, 1898. An original member of the British Academy, 1902. Friend of Edward FitzGerald; sent him a copy of the MS. of Omar Khayyam. Edited and translated numerous Oriental works. Remarkable for the versatility of his knowledge of language and literature as well as for his wide scholarly interests. Lived latterly at 10, Scroope Terrace, Cambridge. Died s.p. Feb. 9, 1903.
